Reef walk in Zanzibar

Today we mostly hung out by the beach and at the resort with the one activity being a walk to the reef.  At low tide you can walk one mile out into the ocean to the edge of the reef.  It is quite a treacherous walk with tons of sea urchins.  You need to wear reef shoes but even with them it is very scary.

Some flowers around the resort.

The waves break a mile out even at high tide when they hit the edge of the reef.  This makes the beech a popular place for kite surfing and other water sports since there are few waves.

The reef walk.  We saw lots of coral and sea life.

And tons of sea urchins.

Star fish.

Purple sea urchin.

The sea urchins were everywhere.

Thousand of them.

We made it out there slowly but we couldn't go to slow as we needed to get back before the tide came in.

Very cool looking very large star fish.

The sand is like fine powder.

Low tide.

Just a few hours later, the tide is coming in.

The ceiling of the lobby.  It is all open air and very beachy.  Super relaxing.
